Investing in Umber Networks
Umber is raising on a SAFE. This page says what the company is building and why the timing works. The terms, the milestone plan and the financials go to prospective investors directly.
What you are backing
Fi‑Wi puts one building‑wide concentrator behind many commoditized 802.11 radio heads, connected over fiber. The concentrator schedules transmissions across time, space and frequency, so unlicensed spectrum carries traffic on a schedule and the tens of billions of Wi‑Fi devices already deployed keep working unchanged.
The forwarding plane is the invention, and it is written up in full in the Fi‑Wi forwarding plane paper. The company also ships the measurement stack that proves the claims, built on iperf 2, which Umber's founder created and maintains.
- Centralized scheduling for unlicensed spectrum
- Commodity 802.11 silicon at the radio head
- Fiber fronthaul carrying PCIe
- Sonde sensors measuring the last wireless hop
Why now
Fiber install costs are driven by labor rates, so the earlier the plant goes in, the cheaper it is. Fiber is also the only durable plant in a building. It carries DWDM, PCIe and whatever comes after them, which makes it the one cabling decision that stays useful across generations of application‑specific wiring.
The 6 GHz low power indoor mode then gives a wide, clean band that behaves well under central scheduling, which is what turns the fiber plant into deterministic indoor wireless.
Tax treatment
Umber stock is eligible for qualified small business stock treatment. Shares issued when a SAFE converts begin their holding period at conversion, and holding them long enough can exclude federal capital gains at exit. Confirm the specifics with your own tax advisor.
